Daniel Westcott wins at The Bend

Daniel Westcott has won his first round since returning to Formula Vee in an eventful weekend at The Bend, while Adam Newton set the West Circuit lap record. After a rain affected practice session on Friday the drivers arrived to a dry but cold circuit for qualifying on Saturday morning. This was the first time on this layout for Formula Vee and turn 6 was the scene of a number of minor excursions off track as the drivers got up to speed as quickly as they could. Adam Newton put his Sabre 02 on pole position ahead of Ben Forgan and Matthew Bialek.

The incident free start to the weekend didn’t last long though. A Formula Ford lost control heading into turn 1 on lap 1 and then slowly rolled back across the circuit leaving championship leaders Adam Newton and Ben Forgan with nowhere to go. All 3 drivers made contact in an incident which would bring out the first Safety Car of the season and Newton and Forgan out of the race. The race restarted after the Safety Car period and Matthew Bialek led all the way to the flag for his first race win after moving to the 1600cc class at the start of the season. Sean Grimmond had a career best 2nd place finishing ahead of fast charging Daniel Westcott who set the fastest lap of the race on the final lap.

Adam Newton and Ben Forgan were left to inspect the damage after Race 1. The Norbar Torque Tools team were able to get their Sabre 02 repaired in time for the second race, while Adam Newton needed to return to the workshop to repair the extensive damage to the front end and gearbox with a race against time to get the car repaired overnight.

Race 2 was very closely contested but incident free as Ben Forgan was able to recover from the back of the grid and go on to win the race. The fight for second place come down to 0.3 second in a drag race to the line between Daniel Westcott and Matthew Bialek.

The Adelaide Auto Air entry of Adam Newton was a welcome sight in the paddock as the teams returned on Sunday morning with repairs being completed at 3am. Any worries about the condition of the car or tiredness were soon put to rest as he took the car from the back of the grid to win Race 3 with less than one second separating the top three. With the finishing order Newton, Forgan and Westcott.

Adam Newton won the remaining 2 races of the day and set the lap record for the West Circuit, but it wasn’t enough to chase down the lead of Daniel Westcott in the Jacer F2K5. The results for the round in the 1600cc class finished with Daniel Westcott winning the weekend ahead of Matthew Bialek and Ben Forgan. With the 1200cc class won by Rhys Rolland in his first season of Formula Vee racing.
